About Us

Barry Kirker, Clinical Psychologist, established South Auckland Psychology to provide the people of Counties Manukau with access to responsive, professional and skilled psychological assessments and treatments. South Auckland Psychology is an entirely private and independent organisation and is not part of the public sector. South Auckland Psychology has been providing services since 2010.

Barry is a Clinical Psychologist with over twenty years’ experience working with a diverse range of persons in various roles in the public, community and private sectors in New Zealand and overseas. Organisations Barry has worked for include Department of Corrections, Counties Manukau District Health Board, ACC, Procare Health, National Sporting Bodies, University of Sydney, Médecins Sans Frontières, Refugees as Survivors, and PPC Worldwide.

Barry is a Registered Clinical Psychologist in both New Zealand and Australia. He is a member of the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychologists and Australian Psychological Society College of Clinical Psychologists. Barry has held management positions and supervised the work of other psychologists. He has published journal articles and authored a book chapter. Outside of his clinical work he has been involved in various political, community, and social groups and he has served on various committees and associations. Clients working with Barry comment on his engaging and down to earth style, making people feel comfortable and complex or sensitive issues easier to talk about and understand. Barry follows primarily the CBT model of therapy.

Barry has particular involvement and expertise in assessment work and report writing for medico-legal matters, workplace consultation, supervision, sport psychology, and other specific areas as outlined on this website. Barry primarily works with adults, individually, as couples, and in groups; as well as organisations. He is able to work with all cultures, with a particular experience with Asian persons.

Barry works with a network of associates who are specialists in certain areas such as Child and Adolescent, specific culture and languages, and modalities such as EMDR. Associates working under South Auckland Psychology contracts such as ACC sensitive claims practice from locations across the Auckland area. Barry can triage your query and refer you to the most appropriate psychologist who is available. All our Psychologists are registered under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act (2003).

NB: Funding is available for some services.

Psychological assessments follow certain structure and standards, and reports can be produced for use in Court or other formal purposes. In relation to therapy, it is the aim to provide a service where client need is thoroughly assessed and the most effective (based on research) and efficient treatment options are recommended taking into account the client's circumstances.
